It is with profound sadness that the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in Seoul announces the passing of His Excellency Dr. Francisco Guterres "Lú Olo," former President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and current President of the FRETILIN party.

At this time of national mourning, we extend our deepest condolences to his bereaved family, his comrades-in-arms, and the people of Timor-Leste. We remember with immense respect and gratitude his lifelong dedication and unwavering service to the sovereignty and democratic foundations of our nation. May he rest in eternal peace.

Biography: A Life of Dedication

Francisco Guterres, affectionately known as "Lú Olo," was born on September 7, 1954, in Ossu, Viqueque District. He was a foundational figure in the history of Timor-Leste, embodying the transition from the struggle for liberation to the establishment of a modern, democratic state.

Architect of the Democratic State

Following the restoration of independence, Lú Olo played a pivotal role in the institutional life of the RDTL:

  • Constitutional Leadership: As President of the Constituent Assembly (2001–2002), he oversaw the drafting and approval of the Constitution of the RDTL.
  • Proclamation of Independence: On May 20, 2002, he performed the formal Declaration of the Restoration of Independence.
  • Presidential Mandate: Elected as President of the Republic in 2017, serving until 2022 with distinction.

Lasting Legacy

H.E. Dr. Francisco Guterres "Lú Olo" passed away on June 21, 2026, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He will be remembered as a statesman who successfully navigated the most challenging chapters of Timorese history, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, dignity, and democratic service.
