Biography: A Life of Dedication
Francisco Guterres, affectionately known as "Lú Olo," was born on September 7, 1954, in Ossu, Viqueque District. He was a foundational figure in the history of Timor-Leste, embodying the transition from the struggle for liberation to the establishment of a modern, democratic state.
Architect of the Democratic State
Following the restoration of independence, Lú Olo played a pivotal role in the institutional life of the RDTL:
- Constitutional Leadership: As President of the Constituent Assembly (2001–2002), he oversaw the drafting and approval of the Constitution of the RDTL.
- Proclamation of Independence: On May 20, 2002, he performed the formal Declaration of the Restoration of Independence.
- Presidential Mandate: Elected as President of the Republic in 2017, serving until 2022 with distinction.
