The Students Association of Timor-Leste in Korea held its official leadership handover ceremony at the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in Seoul, marking a significant milestone in the continued growth and unity of the Timorese student community in the Republic of Korea.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of His Excellency Mr. António Benevides, Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to the Republic of Korea, whose attendance underscored the Embassy's steadfast commitment to supporting the welfare and academic development of Timorese students in the Republic of Korea.
The event was further enriched by the participation of Mr. Colin Jun, a former student of Harvard University, and Ms. Millie Collins, an exchange student from the Australian National University (ANU) currently pursuing her studies at Seoul National University (SNU). Their presence reflected the spirit of international academic exchange and friendship that continues to enrich the educational experience of students in the Republic of Korea.
During the ceremony, leadership of the Association was formally transferred from the outgoing President, Mr. Romario J. de Carvalho Quintao, to the newly elected President, Ms. Deotania Maria da Silva, together with the incoming members of the Association's leadership team.
This transition represents more than an administrative change. It reaffirms the Association's enduring commitment to serving the interests and aspirations of Timorese students, fostering solidarity and mutual support within the student community, and strengthening constructive engagement with relevant institutions and partners in both Timor-Leste and the Republic of Korea.
In remarks delivered on the occasion, Ambassador António Benevides conveyed his appreciation for the dedication and contributions of the outgoing leadership, and encouraged the incoming team to carry forward their responsibilities with integrity, unity, and a strong sense of service to the Timorese student community.
The Ambassador further stressed the importance of education as a cornerstone of national development, and highlighted the value of mutual support, cooperation, and responsible representation of Timor-Leste abroad. He encouraged Timorese students to make the most of their educational opportunities in the Republic of Korea while maintaining a strong connection to their national identity, culture, and the aspirations of their homeland.
The outgoing President, Mr. Romario J. de Carvalho Quintao, was formally recognized for his leadership and dedicated service in representing and supporting the Timorese student community throughout his tenure. The Association extended its sincere appreciation for his contributions and for the efforts undertaken during his administration to strengthen the student community.
Assuming leadership of the Association, Ms. Deotania Maria da Silva will work closely with the newly appointed team to build upon the achievements of the previous administration. Under her leadership, the Association is expected to further advance cooperation, effective communication, academic development, cultural identity, and solidarity among Timorese students in the Republic of Korea.
There are currently 42 Timorese students residing in the Republic of Korea, representing a growing community of young Timorese pursuing educational and professional opportunities abroad. The Students Association continues to serve as an important platform for strengthening connections among these students and fostering a shared sense of community and responsibility.
The ceremony concluded with a renewed commitment from the Students Association of Timor-Leste in Korea to continue working closely and constructively with the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in Seoul, its members, and relevant partners. The Association reaffirmed its determination to contribute positively to the academic and personal development of Timorese students, strengthen people-to-people ties between Timor-Leste and the Republic of Korea, and uphold the values, identity, and aspirations of Timor-Leste within the Timorese community in the Republic of Korea.

이날 행사에는 안토니우 베네비데스 주한 동티모르민주공화국 대사가 참석하여, 한국에 거주하는 동티모르 유학생들의 복지와 학업 발전을 지원하겠다는 대사관의 확고한 의지를 다시 한번 확인시켰다.
또한 하버드대학교 출신인 콜린 준 씨와 호주국립대학교(ANU) 교환학생으로 현재 서울대학교(SNU)에서 수학 중인 밀리 콜린스 씨도 함께 자리해, 한국에서 유학하는 학생들의 국제 학술 교류와 우정의 정신을 더욱 빛냈다.
이날 행사에서 유학생회 회장직은 로마리오 J. 지 카르발류 낀따오 전임 회장으로부터 데오타니아 마리아 다 실바 신임 회장에게 공식적으로 이양되었으며, 새로 임명된 임원진도 함께 자리를 함께했다.
이번 리더십 교체는 단순한 행정적 변화를 넘어서는 의미를 지닌다. 이는 동티모르 유학생들의 권익을 위해 봉사하고, 학생 공동체 내 연대와 상호 지원을 증진하며, 동티모르와 한국 양국의 관련 기관 및 파트너와의 건설적인 협력 관계를 강화하겠다는 유학생회의 변함없는 의지를 재확인하는 자리였다.
베네비데스 대사는 이날 축사를 통해 전임 지도부의 헌신과 공로에 감사를 표하며, 신임 임원진에게 청렴함과 단결심, 그리고 동티모르 유학생 공동체에 대한 봉사 정신을 바탕으로 책임을 다해줄 것을 당부했다.
대사는 이어 교육이 국가 발전의 초석임을 강조하며, 상호 지원과 협력, 그리고 해외에서의 책임 있는 동티모르 대표성의 가치를 역설했다. 아울러 유학생들에게 한국에서의 학업 기회를 최대한 활용하는 동시에, 조국의 정체성과 문화, 고국의 염원과의 굳건한 연결을 유지해 줄 것을 당부했다.
로마리오 J. 지 카르발류 낀따오 전임 회장은 재임 기간 동안 동티모르 유학생 공동체를 대표하고 지원하는 데 헌신한 공로를 인정받았다. 유학생회는 그의 기여와 재임 중 학생 공동체 강화를 위해 기울인 노력에 깊은 감사를 표했다.
