Timor-Leste and Republic of Korea Strengthen Bilateral Partnership and Regional Cooperation

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, H.E. Bendito dos Santos Freitas, met with H.E. Cho Hyun, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, in Seoul, reaffirming the longstanding friendship between the two countries and their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and practical cooperation.

A Friendship Built on Shared History

The meeting highlighted the special bond between Timor-Leste and the Republic of Korea, whose relations have been built on friendship, mutual trust, and a shared history. Minister Freitas' visit marked the first official visit by a Timorese Foreign Minister to the Republic of Korea since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2002, underscoring the historic significance of this milestone in bilateral relations.

The two countries have maintained close ties since 1999, when the Republic of Korea deployed its Sangnoksu (Evergreen) Unit as part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in support of Timor-Leste's independence. This history continues to provide a strong foundation for closer relations and cooperation between the two countries.

Following Timor-Leste's accession to ASEAN last October, the country has also become an important partner within the ASEAN–Republic of Korea framework, creating further opportunities to strengthen cooperation at both bilateral and regional levels.

Expanding Practical Cooperation

During the meeting, Timor-Leste and the Republic of Korea reaffirmed their commitment to deepening practical cooperation across a range of areas of mutual interest, including trade and investment, labor, human resource development, climate change, maritime affairs, and efforts to combat transnational crime.
